Neurology Department

Distinctive activities and work undertaken by the department:
• Daily rounds by one of the department supervisors, along with a weekly joint round by the department's physicians, to discuss important cases.
• A joint scientific session with the Internal Medicine Department on Sunday mornings of each week, in the form of a roundtable discussion, includes a presentation on a topic in neurology or a topic in internal medicine related to neurology, and an in-depth theoretical discussion on the topic.
• A joint scientific session with the Internal Medicine Department on Tuesday mornings of each week, including the presentation of a clinical case that has been or is being treated in the Neurology Department, and its discussion, along with a theoretical study on the topic, in conjunction with the Pathological Anatomy and Radiology Departments in most cases.
• Scientific and practical training of graduate students, both general internal medicine physicians and neurology subspecialists, through assistance and guidance in conducting a thorough neurological examination or performing interventional investigations such as cerebrospinal fluid aspiration.
• Scientific and practical training of graduate students (neurology subspecialties) through assistance and guidance in conducting specific neurological investigations such as electroencephalography, neuromuscular imaging, and visual potentials, etc. • Giving lectures and clinical lessons to medical students (either in the teaching halls or in the specialty department (fourth, fifth, or sixth years), with students assigned to their respective practical lessons and supervision.
• Supervising and discussing master's theses for postgraduate studies, whether at our hospital (in the hospital's private halls or in Al-Basel Auditorium) or at Al-Mouwasat Hospital, as well as participating in the discussion of theses for some other medical departments and even for some other medical colleges.
• Clinical lessons during the academic year for both sixth-year students in the neurology department and fifth-year students in the teaching halls, with some sixth-year students' theses being supervised by faculty members.
• A specialized scientific lecture held once or twice a month, sponsored by a pharmaceutical company, for postgraduate students. This lecture is assigned by a supervisor or a senior neurology doctor. It uses the Continuum series approved by the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Neurology.
• Providing neurological consultations for all internal and surgical departments at the hospital.
• Participating in Syrian Board examinations (committees).
• Scientific sessions twice a week, including a journal club.

Departments within the department:
• Clinical Neurophysiology Department (EEG, Neuroimaging, and Visual Potentials): Conducts various specialized diagnostic studies for patients in the Neurology Department, other departments, and even for specialized referrals from various neurological clinics across the country or even other hospitals. (Telephone: 0112126500/2365)
• Specialized Unit for Pharmacological and Surgical Treatment of Epilepsy (Video-Monitored EEG): This is a specialized scientific unit at the national level, based on scientific cooperation with the Neurosurgery Department. All intractable cases of epilepsy are studied using video-monitored EEG technology, which lasts for an hour in simple cases and for a full day or even several days in complex cases. There is great ambition to develop the unit's work as the hospital expands, especially since it is the only hospital in the country to date. It has provided significant services to patients from within the country and to many patients from neighboring countries. It also makes significant scientific contributions to the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of many non-epileptic movement disorders, including the detection of non-epileptic psychogenic seizures (Telephone: 2126500/2740).
• Neurology Clinic: Open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., receiving all internal neurological cases, along with referrals from neurology specialists nationwide for cases requiring specific academic study (Telephone: 2126500/2344).
