The Department of Joint Surgery at Al-Assad University Hospital devotes its efforts to providing the highest levels of medical and surgical care to patients with musculoskeletal diseases, in accordance with the latest scientific foundations and clinical research conducted globally. In addition, it has a distinguished educational system for residents and trainees in most subspecialties of joint and orthopedic surgery. The department consists of a fully equipped wing with 100 beds, and a specialized outpatient clinic that receives more than 100,000 patients annually with various conditions. It is staffed by a qualified staff capable of handling the most difficult orthopedic cases, ensuring accurate diagnosis and providing the most appropriate conservative or surgical treatment. The department also has an operating room. Equipped with the latest equipment and tools, it performs more than 1,000 various surgical operations annually, in addition to an arthroscopy unit room, which performs more than 1,000 arthroscopic operations annually. The department also includes a number of halls dedicated to lectures and theoretical lessons. The department's work is divided into two areas:

First - Surgical Procedures: The department performs a wide range of surgical procedures in various subfields of orthopedic surgery, including the following:
1 - Adult Joint Reconstruction:
The department is distinguished by its pioneering presence at the national level in providing medical care to patients with large joint inflammation. It receives referrals from all over the country for patients with osteoarthritis of the hip, knee, and shoulder joints, as well as cases of degeneration following trauma, in addition to cases of Hip dysplasia and avascular necrosis of the femoral head. The most common operations performed to manage these cases are:
• Total hip replacement (THA) (cemented and cementless for young people), and TKA (knee and shoulder), with the necessary reconstructive surgery, prosthetic replacement, and bone grafts.
• Hemiarthroplasty (half hip replacement).
• Revision joint replacement.
• Osteotomies to restore the limb axis in young people.
• Arthroscopy and cartilage reconstruction in young people.

2 - Arthroscopic Surgery:
This is considered a unit. Arthroscopy at Al-Assad University Hospital is one of the leading centers in the field of arthroscopic surgery, both technically and medically, dealing with a wide spectrum of ligamentous and cartilage injuries to the knee, as well as injuries to the shoulder joint and ankle ligaments. The department performs numerous arthroscopic surgeries, most notably:
• In the knee joint: Meniscus surgery, anterior and posterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and collateral ligament (PCL) reconstruction, and the management of osteoarthritis. Chondromalacia patella, subluxation, and mild luxation, complete or partial synovectomy, biopsies, etc.
• In the shoulder joint: Acromioplastic surgery in impingement syndrome, management of Bankart lesions, avulsion injuries, rotator cuff tears, and shoulder capsule tears. • In the ankle joint: Removal of loose bodies, osteochondritis dissecans, and others.

3 - Foot and Ankle: The most prominent surgeries performed:
• Partial and complete triple and quadruple ankle arthrodesis.
• Achilles tendon ruptures.
• Hallux valgus and planus arches.
• Foot deformities following trauma.

4 - Hand Surgery: The most prominent surgeries performed:
• Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
• Dupuytren's contracture.
• DeQuervain's disease.
• Trigger finger and mallet finger.
• Cysts of all types.
• Drop hand surgery and tendon transfer.

5 - Orthopedic Trauma: The Joint Surgery Department at Al-Assad University Hospital receives cases of musculoskeletal trauma, treating all types of fractures and their various complications. The following procedures are performed:
• Reduction of all types of fractures using internal and external fixation materials.
• Management of nonunion and malunion.
• Management of leg length discrepancy.
• Managing cases of osteomyelitis.
• Performing osteotomies to correct limb axis.

Second: Education and Scientific Research:
The department's staff includes specialist doctors, professors, and supervisors, in addition to more than one resident doctor from graduate students. They are guided in various practical and theoretical aspects of orthopedic surgery. They also receive training under the direct supervision of professors and specialists on various surgical procedures performed in the department. They also conduct specialized academic research, which qualifies them to obtain master's and doctoral degrees. The Joint Surgery Department also participates with its medical staff in scientific activities inside and outside the hospital, including weekly scientific seminars, lectures, and conferences.
